CAN WE REALLY HEAL WITH QURAN?
Ruqyah is spiritual healing. It is done through recitation of the Quran, seeking of refuge in Allah, remembrance and supplications. They are used as a means of treating physical sicknesses as well as black magic, evil eye, possession of Jinn and envy.
But it doesn’t necessarily work for everyone.
There is a secret.
That secret is your iman and yaqeen. In order for it to work you have to really put your full trust, reliance and dependence only on Allah, the source of all healing and cure. Sure, there are technicalities on how to do it and what to recite, but without the essence of iman and yaqeen, it will not work. No matter how perfectly it is executed.
HOW IS IT DONE?
A person can do the ruqyah on themselves, or get it done by a pious person. It really depends on the condition and the situation. But one thing is clear…the person’s iman has to rise along with the treatment. Otherwise, the Shaykh can perform ruqya in the case of black magic or possession, the jinn may leave, and if the person is not protected, it can return and repossess the person.
It cannot be stressed enough on how important it is to strengthen one’s iman and relationship with Allah!
Ibn Hajar (RA) said there is a consensus on the using of Ruqyah if three conditions are met:
1) It must be with the speech of Allah (Qur’aan) and his names and attributes.
2) It must be in the Arabic language, or what is known to be its meaning in other languages.
3) To believe that Ruqyah has no benefit by itself, but the benefits are from Allah.
There are some “spiritual” leaders who perform ruqyah which has nothing to do with Islam. It involves shirk (associating partners with Allah.) It leads a person to his destruction in this life and the next and increases calamities and sicknesses. This type of ruqyah is completely prohibited.
It includes:
- Magic (whether learning, practicing, or teaching it),
- Fortune telling,
- Horoscopes,
- superstitious belief, and
- at-Tameemah (charms and amulets).
Even though you can do the ruqyah yourself, but just like you would not take medicine without the consultation and prescription of the doctor, it is best to reach out to a ‘spiritual doctor’, a pious knowledgeable person who can guide you through the process. This is especially true in the cases of black magic and possession. All other illnesses can be easily done on your own.
This is how ruqyah is commonly done…
- reciting each supplication odd number of times (3,5 or 7)
- You can recite ruqya on yourself by gathering the palms of your hands and reciting in them the ruqya and then blow in your hands and wipe the area that is ill and hurting you.
- You can also bring zam zam water and recite supplications on it 3, 5 or 7 times and blow every time you recite it. Drink from this water in the morning, in the afternoon and before going to bed and also you can wipe with it over the places that hurt you.
One of the most common affliction you can treat through ruqyah is evil eye.
The evil eye is like an arrow or spear that leaves the soul of the envier and goes to the person that is envied. It afflicts the person envied at times and sometimes it doesn’t. When it doesn’t afflict him, it is because of the protective methods he uses (whether supplications, seeking refuge, etc.) Also, when it doesn’t. afflict him, the evil eye can return to the envier. (The Medicine of the Prophet, 138)
So, it is necessary for each and every one of us to take the necessary precautions and try to prevent being affected by the evil eye, and to say the supplications and remembrance upon seeing something amazing and good.
Following are some of the treatments for evil eye:
Recite as much as possible:
Surah Al Fatiha
Surah Al-Baqarah ayah 137
Surah An-Nisaa Ayah 54
Surah Al-Qalam ayah 51
Surah Al-Mulk ayah 3
Surah Al Ahqaaf ayah 31
Surah Al-Israa ayah 82
Surah Al-Fussilat ayah 44
Surah Yunus ayah 57
Surah at-Tawbah ayah 14
Surah Ash-Shu’araa ayah 80
Ayat al Kursy (ayah 255, surah Al Baqarah)
Surah Al Ikhlaas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas.
Recite the above ayats along with all the authentic supplications of protection. then blow in the right hand and wipe over the entire body, especially the place of affliction.
When the Prophet SAW went to bed every night, he would hold his hands together and blow into them, and recite into them Qul huwa Allah Ahad, Qul a’oodhu bi rabbi l-falaq, and Qul a’oodhu bi rabb in-nas. Then he would wipe them over whatever he could of his body, starting with his head and face and the front of his body, and he would do that three times. (Al Bukhari)
One of the prayers that Prophet SAW recited on Hasan (RA) and Husain (RA) to protect them from evil eye, and we should recite on children as well is as follows:
u‛eedhukumaa bi kalimaat-illaahi-taammati min kulli shayṭaanin, wa haammatin, wa min kulli ‛aynin laammah.
I seek protection for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, and every beast, and from every evil eye. (Al-Bukhari 4/119)
Remember…
- The secret of ruqyah is firm belief in Allah SWT; Allah is the healer, not a person.
- Strengthen one’s belief in Allah SWT in order to protect oneself from jinn and shaytaan.
- Consult an educated pious person and receive their help with complicated cases such as black magic and possession.
- Avoid every other forms of ‘spiritual’ healing except Quran and Prophetic prayers.
May Allah SWT protect us all from evil and heal us with His word. Ameen.
